The postgraduate Diploma in Auditory Verbal Therapy – the first of its kind in the UK and Europe – plays a vital role in modernising service delivery to meet the needs of today's hearing-impaired children. The qualification provides the highly specialised skill set required to develop the listening and speaking potential of children identified by the Newborn Hearing Screening Programme (NHSP). Effective intervention with babies and very young children can have a life-shaping impact on their language and learning outcomes. The diploma focuses on how professionals can best maximise the potential of very early intervention.
Geared to the needs of babies and very young children, this postgraduate course is designed for teachers of the deaf, speech and language therapists, audiologists and other professionals working with the 0-4 age group. It can be taken over a period as short as four terms or longer to suit the individual participant. Part 1 is delivered by online distance learning and does not require a sabbatical period. Part 2 involves short periods of residential learning and clinical placement.
The courses are vital stepping stones in making a service-transforming difference for health and education bodies and a life-changing difference for the child. The combination of early diagnosis, appropriate hearing-assistive technology and effective intervention makes it possible quickly to close the gap between hearing-impaired children and their hearing peers, giving children every chance of starting mainstream school with age-appropriate language and minimising the amount of special needs support required.
