Report from our first Open Morning: 09 May 2008
The team at Auditory VerbalUK held the first in a series of ‘Open Mornings' to be held during the coming year. We had a group of 8 visitors who had expressed an interest in finding out more about the work of our charity. In particular, we were delighted to welcome Professor Ruth Litovsky from the Department of Communicative Disorders at the University of Wisconsin-Madison who has published widely in the fields of binaural hearing and bilateral cochlear implantation.
The morning started with an introduction to the Auditory Verbal approach. Our visitors were then able to watch a live session of therapy during which Ernie, his Mum and younger sister had great fun with sausages popping and banging. During the session, our visitors were alerted to the purpose of each activity and were able to appreciate the nature of the task whether it be diagnostic or to encourage listening and talking. The session was relayed to a recently installed wide screen monitor that has meant the end to the days when our visitors had to huddle close around our very much smaller screens. We were delighted to be using this new teaching aid for the first time.
As ever, we were very grateful to Ernie and his family not only for allowing their session to be watched by so many visitors but also because Ernie's Mum, Chrissie, then came to meet everyone and to answer their questions. Thank you Chrissie!
Naturally enough, we needed our visitors to be participants in our Open Morning rather than observers! In response to our question “If you were to tell someone about your visit to AV UK , what would you say?”, we had the following responses:-
- "Excellent positive attitude and encouraging environment for the parents and children."
- "Highly informative. Full of practical ideas and sound reasoning. More holistic than originally thought."
- "Would recommend that families consider AV."
