Auditory Verbal UK are extremely excited to announce the launch of our new UK wide project called On Your Doorstep.

For this project we will be touring the country to deliver workshops which aim to raise awareness and expectations of what deaf children can achieve.

In 2016, only 33% of deaf children were recorded as having achieved a “good level of development” in the early years. In contrast, 80% of children who spent at least two years on our Auditory Verbal therapy programme achieved age-appropriate language, ready to start mainstream school.

We do not think that it is fair that less than 5% of families are currently accessing an Auditory Verbal therapy programme. Therefore, we have developed this project to reach more families and the professionals who support them.

There are some key challenges to increasing the reach of Auditory Verbal therapy, including raising expectations of what deaf children can achieve and making families aware of the services that are available to them.

We hope that through this project, more families will access Auditory Verbal therapy through our distance programme, and more professionals will be encouraged to train in the listening and spoken language approach.

Noel Kenely, Auditory Verbal Therapist and outreach lead, says:

It’s fantastic to launch this exciting new project. Our goal is to improve the outcomes of deaf children across the UK, and On Your Doorstep is key for raising awareness of what is possible. We look forward to meeting you at an event on your doorstep!

Our first stop will be Swindon! We will also be visiting Norfolk, Edinburgh, Cardiff and Devon in early 2018.
