Our BBC Radio 4 appeal, presented by Waterstone’s Children’s Laureate, Joseph Coelho told Khush’s story.

When Khush’s hearing loss was diagnosed as a baby his parents feared he wouldn’t be able to talk or do the same things as other children. They certainly didn’t expect him to be thriving at mainstream school, talking to authors about his love of storytelling or playing the piano on BBC Radio 4!

When he was a baby, Khush received cochlear implants and came to Auditory Verbal UK where his parents were supported to develop his listening and spoken language. With Auditory Verbal therapy, deaf children learn how to make sense of the sound they receive through their hearing technology and are supported to develop language so they can learn to talk like their hearing friends.

Khush is now a chatty 11-year-old who loves to read, write and tell stories. He thinks he might want to become a writer, a cricketer or possibly an accountant. He has the same opportunities in life as his hearing friends and the world is his oyster.

We need your help today to transform the lives of more deaf children like Khush.
