What is Auditory Verbal therapy?

Auditory Verbal UK (AVUK) is a UK-wide charity that supports deaf babies and children to learn to listen and speak with Auditory Verbal therapy

Auditory Verbal therapy is a family-centred approach to developing spoken language through listening for deaf children. It supports pre-school deaf children, from birth to five years of age, learn how to make sense of the sound they receive through their hearing technology, like cochlear implants and hearing aids, and develop spoken language so they can learn to talk like their hearing friends.

AVUK’s Auditory Verbal therapy family programme includes fortnightly therapy sessions. All therapy sessions are delivered by a highly specialist certified Auditory Verbal Therapist, who is a Teacher of The Deaf, Speech and Language Therapist or an Audiologist who has undergone a minimum of three years additional post-graduate internationally accredited training.

As a charity, AVUK offers sessions both in person, online or using a hybrid approach of both depending on the needs and preferences of each family. We currently have bursaries for families across the UK to help access our programme.

What happens in an initial appointment?

An initial appointment is a 90-minute session with a highly specialist certified Auditory Verbal Therapist. This session is designed to give parents and caregivers a flavour of what the Auditory Verbal therapy programme is like. Parents and caregivers will be supported and coached in strategies to develop their child’s listening and spoken language skills. At the end of the session the families generate Take Home Messages about what they have learned in the session and how they will use the strategies into everyday routines, as well as discuss the suitability of the programme. There is no formal assessment or report during an initial appointment.

Rescheduling and cancellation policy: We understand that sometimes things happen, and you may need to reschedule or cancel your appointment. More than 48 hours before your appointment, families are free to reschedule their initial appointment should they need to by contacting 01869 325000 or [email protected]. Families will be charged £50 if they cancel their appointment within 48 hours, and £100 if cancelled within 24 hours or if they do not show up. In instances of sudden illness within the 48-hour window, families can reschedule their appointment free of charge. If families do not wish to reschedule, the cancellation fee will be charged as per the terms and conditions of the booking.
