Mia

Mia supporting Loud Shirt DayMia was born profoundly deaf. Mia’s mum, Rayan, who is herself profoundly deaf was devastated when she discovered that Mia was deaf too. “Now my daughter was going to have to go through all of what I had to as a child,” says Rayan “She would not be able to speak on the phone, follow group discussions, listen to music or enjoy theatre.”

But thanks to specialist support from Auditory Verbal UK, Mia learnt to listen and talk with Auditory Verbal therapy. Mia is now thriving at school, faces a bright future ahead and will have the same opportunities in life as her hearing friends. Mia dressed up in her brightest clothes for Loud Shirt Day, along with her little sister Gabriella who is also being supported by AVUK’s family programme. Join Mia and Gabriella this Loud Shirt Day and help create a sound future for more deaf babies and children.

Sam

Sam supporting Loud Shirt DayAfter finding out their son was deaf, Sams parents were keen to understand how they could support him to learn to listen and speak. “‘Fear of the Unknown’ is an often used phrase often used phrase but, for the first time in our lives, we were scared. Scared for our son’s future.” With no access to Auditory Verbal Therapy through the NHS where they live, they were recommended to AVUK by a friend. Sam’s parents said “AVUK has been life changing for Sam. And us. AVUK helped give Sam the confidence and tools to find and use his voice. Since graduating from AVUK, Sam’s deafness has never held him back. His speech is remarkable, as many people (professionals among them) often observe and comment on.”

Sam took on his own unique Loud Shirt Day challenge – a sponsored silence. The 11-year-old said: “I am profoundly deaf and I was helped by AVUK to speak so I wanted to raise money for them with a sponsored two hour silence. This was very difficult as I am quite a big chatterbox but the whole family managed it although I was relieved when it was over and I could talk again!”

Join Sam this Loud Shirt Day to help all deaf children have the same opportunities in life as their hearing friends.
