Auditory Verbal therapy

Auditory Verbal therapy supports deaf babies and children in developing spoken language so they can learn to talk like their hearing friends.

AVUK’s Auditory Verbal therapy family programme includes fortnightly therapy sessions. All therapy sessions are delivered by a highly specialist certified Auditory Verbal Therapist, who is a teacher of the deaf, speech and language therapist or audiologist who has undergone a minimum of three years of additional post-graduate internationally accredited training.

As a charity, we are able to offer sessions both in person at our location in north-east Leeds, online or using a hybrid approach. We currently have bursaries for families living in Leeds and beyond to help access our programme.

Meet Auditory Verbal Therapist, Liz Hamilton, based in Leeds

Liz qualified as a Speech and Language Therapist in 1999. Her final clinical placement at university gave Liz a passion for working with children with a hearing loss and their families. Since then, Liz has worked for the NHS supporting a wide range of children, from four months to 16 years old, in a variety of settings, including a specialist school for the Deaf, resourced provisions within mainstream schools, nurseries, homes and community clinics.

Liz joined the team at AVUK in October 2023 and is based in Yorkshire. She also works as an independent therapist with a developing interest in supporting children with additional needs, in particular neurodivergent children.

Lola’s story

Shortly after being born, Lola's newborn hearing test revealed she hadn't passed. Lola's family discovered that her profound deafness was due to Waardenburg syndrome and after the diagnosis they discovered Auditory Verbal therapy and AVUK. Lola, who is from Sheffield, and her parents enrolled for the Auditory Verbal therapy programme to support Lola in developing speaking and language skills. Fast forward to now, Lola is 6-years-old and is bilingual in both French and English and starting to learn Spanish. She loves music and dancing and has a bright future ahead of her!

Molly's story

Born profoundly deaf, Molly enrolled in our Auditory Verbal therapy programme to learn to listen and speak as a baby. 16-year-old Molly is now thriving at sixth form and is planning to study A Levels including History and French at her local sixth form College in Huddersfield.

Mum Emma said: “Working with AVUK was fantastic and just so helpful for Molly who has gone on to attend mainstream school and now achieve such wonderful exam results. We are so very proud of her”.
