Working Through Audition

This six-month course is available in an online learning format.

Designed to equip professionals with the core skills needed to develop auditory practice when working with children with hearing loss and their families, we are also able to deliver this course online to employers wishing to train groups of staff.

For professionals who want to go on and train to become LSLS CertAVT®s this foundation course is accredited by the AG Bell Academy and carries 36 CEUs.

Topics include:

  • Working through audition
  • Moving on from the ling sounds
  • Going from one to two key words
  • Checking understanding through listening
  • Speech acoustics
  • The parent journey

Please note that because of the nature of this course, participants must have a pre-school caseload and be working in an auditory-oral setting. They must also have permission to record their therapy sessions and share clips of those sessions with their course tutor and fellow course participants. At the end of the course delegates are required to submit a post-course written and video assignment. Delegates who achieve a distinction (80% or higher) will be eligible to undertake our advanced training.

Online Format

This course comprises 36 hours of tuition and is delivered over a period of six months using a combination of fortnightly live interactive webinars with podcasts in the intervening weeks.

The theory elements are delivered through podcasts, which delegates access via the portal on our website and watch at a time that is convenient to them.  At the end of each podcast delegates are set tasks to incorporate into their sessions.  Delegates are required to record these sessions and clips are then uploaded to our secure online classroom so they can be watched and reviewed by the group during the live webinars, with the course tutors giving feedback, advice and ideas for further development.  Delegates are required to participate in a minimum of 80% of the webinars in order to complete the course.

The quality of materials provided in the podcasts and associated reading is fantastic. The wealth of knowledge from the therapists who have led our webinars is evident. They have provided really useful feedback on my video submissions that have informed my practice. Sometimes what appears as quite “subtle” techniques has transformed the outcomes of my sessions. I hope to continue to build on this during the remainder of my course and in my daily practice after the completion of the course.

The maximum number of delegates for the online courses is five and there are several start dates for the course each year.

I am amazed at the speed I am acquiring new knowledge and skills that are directly and immediately transferable to my everyday work with children who have a hearing impairment. My knowledge and confidence grows every day in relation to how best to equip parents to create really effective listening and speaking environments for their children.
